My sister sent this beautiful sunflower arrangement on Monday as part of my birthday present. She must have been reading my mind because I started to buy some for myself last week, but decided it was frivolous!
I finished my 16 sunflower blocks and pieced them yesterday. I am trying to decide if I should add a border or not. Border?
I can take my time to decide because it is going to stay a flimsy for awhile. I will eventually quilt it on my mom's long arm, but I will be on the lookout for a backing.
This is a terrific pattern to use up some scraps with! Here is the free pattern http://www.butterflythreadsquilting.com/p/mystery-quilt.html
I love making a quilt from fabric I have on hand! Which led me to start this sailboat quilt yesterday...
It is also a free pattern http://www.quiltmag.com/quilt-patterns/quilt-junejuly-2013-%E2%80%93-naturally-nautical-blue-and-white-remake/ but I'm only making mine with 18 boats and baby quilt size. Here is the way the pattern shows it...
I am a little worried about the big blank blocks and my quilting skills, but just the wavy quilt stitch will be easy and look nautical, but should it go vertical, horizontal, or diagonal? Please help me decide!
So pretty!! I say with go borderless! ;)
ReplyDeleteLove the sailboat quilt. So wavy stitch I would definitely go horizontal so the boats look like they are floating on little waves in the sea :)
ReplyDeleteLove your sunflowers! While I love borderless for some quilts, this one to me is asking for borders of yellows and greens. For backing, how about sunflower fabric? I've seen--and bought--several gorgeous prints online.
ReplyDeleteAnd for those great sailboats, horizontal wavy quilting would give them something to gently sail upon.
Hello, thank you for the link to the pattern for the sunflower quilt! Yours is gorgeous. About borders, I'd try 3 : a set of strips of varying widths; green, brown and a background strip in between, unless you keep one of the colours for the binding. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI agree horizontal. Both quilts look great.
ReplyDeleteThe sunflower quilt is stunning. You mixed the fabric beautifully. I would love to have it on my bed! I would leave it borderless to keep the eyes on the flowers. Please, share pictures once it is quilted.
ReplyDeleteAs for the boat, I would also make horizontal (big) weaves. I'm looking forward to see the end result of this quilt too!
Love the sunflowers, both real and pieced! Thanks for the pink to the pattern!
ReplyDeleteI love your sunflower quilt!!! I'll have to go have a look at the pattern next.
ReplyDeleteI think a border would look great, or you could put a dark brown binding on. That would look nice too :)
the sailboats are fab. Love the sunflower top. How about a border with applique stems?
ReplyDeleteVery pretty sunflowers, both pieced and bundled! I love yellow flowers, they're just so happy. :) I would do borders, I like a good border. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteI love the sailboats! Horizontal wavy lines would be perfect, like ocean waves! As far as the sunflower one I guess it would depend upon how big it is without them. I usually decide border or no depending on size.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the sunflowers! It's so summery!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing at Needle and Thread Thursday!

ReplyDeleteI love the scrappy yellows and greens used!! Thanks for rejuvinating this breathe of spring at TUesday Archives this week!!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful quilts. I love how the star makes a sunflower.
ReplyDeleteA very nice sailboat quilt. How did you decide to quilt in the empty white spaces?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful scrappy projects. The Sunflower on is stunning.
ReplyDeleteI thought it looked familiar. I must have seen it on Oh Scrap! last week. Now it is a 9-patch. Beautiful both times. :-) The 9 works well as cornerstone with these blocks.
ReplyDeleteLove those sunflowers! Your elephant 9-patch is cute too.
