Scrappy 2015!

Happy New Year! I have been seeing everyone's New Year blogs and wrap ups from 2014 and have been pondering what 2015 has in store for my quilting. This orange peel quilt was made completely from my scraps and is my favorite finish from 2014 even if it involved curves (I usually avoid curves!). Twenty years ago this month, I started quilting! Of course being a quilter for 20 years means I have developed quite a fabric stash--with over flowing scrap bins. My focus this year will be working with what I have on hand--scraps, stash, and UFOs.

January's color is blue--regular blue, not navy or turquoise. Here is my blue scrap bin all over my cutting table--I have plenty of blues to work from! 

I cannot remember who made this gorgeous quilt top, but I put a picture of it on my Inspiration board (if anyone knows who made this let me know and I will give them credit and link to their blog)

and I made a purple version in the spring of 2014. I will make blocks for a rainbow version or maybe even two of them each month. This quilt could work for a baby or be made bigger for a lap sized quilt and I can easily quilt it on my Pfaff.

Here are my blue blocks I made yesterday and this morning- I am calling them Medallion Log Cabin blocks. I am using Kona white because I know I can get more than I have on hand if needed, but I do have a few yards already. 

Here are the directions I developed for making these Medallion Log Cabin blocks:

 Here are the pieces and their cut sizes in inches. The color portion of the block requires 2.5 inch wide pieces and the white/background portion uses 1.5 inch wide pieces which gives the blocks a curved look.

 This is the block layout with the pieces.

 Step 1 sew the 1.5 x 2.5 inch background to the 2.5 inch colored square. Of course since we are quilting, you need to use a quarter inch seam for all sewing and press all the seams toward the outside of the block.

 Step 2 add the 1.5 x 3.5 inch background rectangle to the bottom of the Step 1 unit.

 Step 3 add the 2.5 x 3.5 inch colored rectangle to the right side of the block.

 Step 4 add the 2.5 x 5.5 inch colored rectangle to the top of the block.

 Step 5 add the 1.5 x 5.5 inch background rectangle to the left side of the block.

Step 6 add the 1.5 x 6.5 inch background rectangle to the bottom of the block. Make four of these and   put them together to form the block, Medallion Log Cabin.

These are not my blocks, but they are my inspiration! This is the perfect design for some of those odd ball scraps that will not go with much else.

Yesterday, I made a couple with bright blue blocks

and a couple with country blues.

 Onto a UFO project, this is my Sugar Stars designed by Lori Holt. I got Kona navy for the background (I special ordered a bolt at Joann's using a 50% off coupon--the only way to buy solids) and I am using mostly Marmalade prints from Moda's Bonnie and Camille. I made these blocks during the summer on my Featherweight while stitching with my mom and Lindsey. The blocks have been sitting on sewing machine cabinet gathering dust.

I am laying them out on my guest bed/design board and I plan on sewing them together this afternoon and evening while watching the NFL Playoffs. Then, it will go into the flimsy UFO pile awaiting quilting. I want to start getting my backings together for those, so I will have no excuses for not using my mom's longarm. 

 I have been Slow Stitching all week on my Journey of the Quilter during movies with my family and hanging out with my mom and dad. I am just stitching around each piece with DMC blanc perle cotton #8. 

It is finally cold and we have snow on the ground here in western Colorado, so it is Slow Sunday Stitching weather and I will be joining everyone else at Kathy's link up tomorrow and getting further on this while watching football. Winter Break 2014

Sorry I disappeared for so long. We went to Las Vegas early last Saturday morning and came back on Monday. We had a great time celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. 

After our return, I scrambled with last minute Christmas preparations, but I managed to embroider this label for my Journey of a Quilter BOM project and get to the fabric store and find a good border fabric.

 They had a perfect fuchsia that reads solid. 

 This is really the only place on the quilt where the quilting is really going to show up...I am planning on using this stencil and white perle cotton for all my quilting.

This floral fabric was a backing I picked up for $4 a yard a couple of months ago. I love it!!! The lime green will be the binding. The bright, modern fabrics were what really attracted me to this project in the first place, so in the end I decided to embrace them with the finishing. I hope to piece the back today and pin it for quilting!

 I finished both of my Little Letters quilts yesterday. This is the bright version, quilted with a wavy stitch horizontally. I washed both of them this morning, so they shrank and crinkled up nicely.

 Here is the backing which I found in my stash. I bought nothing for this bright one!!!

 And the Little Letters country version. I did spend $5 and bought a creamy solid for the sashing and inner border.

 This one I quilted with the wavy stitch vertically. I want to thank Temecula Quilt Co. for their Little Letters quilt along and free patterns! I had a great time participating and using up some scraps.

My winter break is going great and I hope to spend this next week being productive in my sewing room!

20th Anniversary

 Yesterday was our 20th wedding anniversary! It is hard to believe it has been that long. Besides being married to my fabulous husband for 20 years, it also means I have been quilting for 20 years. My hubby encouraged me to get a hobby soon after we married and I think I started my first quilting class in January 1995. Anyway, I woke up to this beautiful arrangement in my kitchen first thing in the morning.

 Then, he had this sweet little arrangement sent to me at work later in the day! He and my friend,  an amazing florist, conspired. This one was sent anonymously. He is always a trickster! We are heading to Las Vegas for to celebrate, enjoy some delicious food, and football wagering on Saturday. I am planning on bringing some embroidery for handwork and loaded a couple of new books on my Kindle.

I pieced my Journey of a Quilter blocks of the month together and tried to find a border at my LQS, but was not sold on anything. How about some advice on a border from blog land? HELP!!! 

What a Relief!

I got a call Saturday afternoon from the sewing machine repairman that my Pfaff was ready to be picked up. I rushed down there before they closed and before the rain/snow hit. It was not a major repair just a good tune up was needed. That was a big relief! Now, it is ready for major sewing during my Christmas Break in a week. While my machine was in the shop, I managed to finish my embroidering 

on my Journey of a Quilter BOM block 8 and I pieced together block 9 Saturday morning with my Singer Featherweight.

I got started on the hand work last night and made some good progress!

 This morning I worked on this part of the block for Slow Sunday Stitching. Even though it is supposed to be slow stitching, I am trying to finish up the embroidery like a mad woman because

2. pin baste both Little Letters quilts for machine quilting

4.  trace some embroidery blocks to take with me to Las Vegas next weekend

My to do list is probably a little too ambitious with this being the last week of work before Christmas Break, but whatever does not get done can be done when we get back from Las Vegas...

Little Letters Bright Top

 I signed up to participate in Friday Night With Friends which is an Australian link up, so it is funny that they have their Friday when it is still our Thursday in the U.S.  I actually had plans to meet friends for dinner and gossip, so I sewed before I went out. I made binding for my Little Letters Country quilt and a label for it too.  My daughter and I spent the morning doing some Christmas shopping, so I did not get into my sewing room until the afternoon. I went to attach the label to the backing so I could get it ready to pin baste and quilt. I like to use the buttonhole stitch on my Pfaff, but my machine had other ideas and was skipping terribly. I tried all my trouble shooting tricks to no avail. The machine is due for a tune up, but December is not the best time for a repair! I tried to take it down to the sewing machine shop, but I was too late and the street was getting closed for the Christmas Light Parade. I will have to take it in Monday afternoon...I hope it is nothing serious!!!

I got out my Singer Featherweight and pieced my Little Letters Bright quilt. My Featherweight is not as fast as my Pfaff, but it sure pieces well.  This picture is not great because I took it after dark in my sewing room (the M block is orange and the N block is fuchsia, but in this lighting they look virtually the same). I found a backing in my stash that is royal blue with green that will be great. With my Pfaff going to the repair shop, I won't get either of the Little Letters quilted this week...I have another quilt I can piece on my Featherweight in the meantime.

 For Slow Sunday Stitching, I am concentrating on this block from my Journey of a Quilter BOM. The flowers on this part are about half way done, but there is quite a bit more work to go on the rest of the block.

I expect the last block for this BOM to arrive this week and hopefully, I can get it all pieced together before the new year! I am thinking about putting a design wall up in my sewing room and rearranging  some of the hanging quilts to make room for the Journey of a Quilter quilt. Little Letters Country Top

 Look what I finished piecing tonight! This is my Little Letters Country quilt. I have thoroughly enjoyed making these Little Letter blocks each week. This was a free block of the week pattern offered by Temecula Quilt Company. They gave directions for two letters each week. I dug into my scrap bins and made each letter with a different background fabric. I did buy a creamy Kona for the sashing and inner border, but I only spent $5 on that.

 I stopped by my local quilt shop on my way home from work looking for this brown fabric with the alphabet on it in red, medium blue, and navy. They no longer had it and I was kind of bummed, but I figured I would finish piecing the blocks and take it back with me either tomorrow after work or on Saturday and find a backing...Then a look in my brown tub and guess what I found-- the exact fabric I was looking for and enough of it to use for the backing! This was truly a happy dance moment. This is a pretty cute baby quilt for only spending $5. I have enough of the navy I used in the outer border for binding too. I want to get it quilted this weekend and start piecing the bright colored blocks I made. Any ideas for quilting it?

 We put our Christmas tree up earlier this week and my new tree skirt looks great under it.

This is the December block of my Count On It perpetual calendar from Art to Heart. Gee that Santa looks familiar to the ones in my tree skirt...Same great designer! I really enjoy this calendar in my classroom at one of my schools, I am even thinking of making another set for my other classroom...Perhaps, I should get some more UFOs done before I start anything else, but it sure is tempting! Any quilting ideas for the Little Letters would be appreciated!
