Off to College!

I am leaving this morning to take my daughter to college. It is going to be a pretty intense week. First, we are driving to Denver today (5+ hours) and staying at a hotel near the airport tonight because our flight boards at 5:45am. We fly in to Newark, NJ and then pick up our rental SUV to drive 4 hours to Syracuse. We will stay in Syracuse shopping for all her dorm stuff until Thursday her actual move in day to Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. Then Friday, I drive by myself back to Newark to fly back to Denver. I will probably stay Friday night in Denver and drive back home on Saturday. It is bittersweet as she is our only child and she turns 18 this week!
I decided I needed a simple handwork project for the trip. I started looking through my UFOs and found this embroidery project that I am not sure who started (my sister or my daughter?), but I know it was not me because their stitches are much tinier than mine! All that was left to do was the words and the vines. I finished it up last night.
In the UFO pile was this fall embroidery project. I think my sister had traced it because I always trace with regular pencil and this is the blue washout pen and I already made one for myself. The UFO was probably part of her stash she gave me years ago--there were 14 kitchen garbage bags full and it took me a week to organize!
These are the perle cotton colors I grabbed for my embroidery. I don't know if I will be able to hit a quilt shop or two, but there is one in Syracuse that I saw in the Quilt Sampler magazine very close to our hotel I hope to visit! I will be stitching at our hotel tonight as I watch the Olympics for Slow Sunday Stitching

Have a great week!

  3. Your daughter is on her way to the rest of her life. I know you will miss her a lot. Maybe you will have more stitching time.
The stitchery with the saying about the number of days in a month is interesting. I learned that saying early in life.

  4. DS2 turned 18 last month. He heads off to college next week. I got a "replacement child" in an attempt to fill my empty nest... a new-to-me longarm quilting machine. I plan to have some BIG fun!! I hope you find a way to cope with your empty nest, too.

  8. Oh my it is so hard to let go, but it also means success. Enjoy your time with your daughter on the trip to school and bring some stitching along to keep your mind off of how much you will miss her. Thankfully, the digital world makes it so much easier to keep in touch these days! I wish her the best of luck as she heads to her life's ambition!

  9. Oh my goodness that is quite a trek to college. Mine were only 4 hours away by car and that was hard enough. Then again one of them stayed near the college and one went cross-country when graduating. Best wishes for your daughter and hugs for you.

  10. Hang in there mom. It will be hard. Over the last four years I have had to separate with my two daughters quiet frequently. They are both in college. The way BYU-I works is they are only in school a few months, or in other words one semester, at a time. We have had to learn how to say goodbye a lot. But it does get better. I feel for you!

  14. Our son is turning 18 and goes off to college next year. It seems like the time flew and I realize I'll soon be sending him off, too. I don't know if you're ever quite ready for that moment.

  16. Thinking of you today, Tanya! This is such an exciting time for kids, but also a big transition for parents. Wishing your daughter an amazing experience, and sending you a hug! Keep stitching - it will definitely help!

  17. I'll be thinking of you as we are doing the same here this week. My girl will only be 90 minutes away and I've already cried every day for a week. I am going to miss her so much but I'm so happy that she's starting this wonderful adventure of her own. How's it possible to be so happy for someone else and so sad for yourself at the same time? Good luck to you and safe travels to you both!

  20. You must be so proud of your daughter -- not only her accomplishments but her bravery for heading out for a new experience far from home. It has been my experience, those that have been raised in Colorado always come home!! Too bad about your grandmother's Desert Rose dishes. My mother always used them for special occasions -- I do the same. Sally
