This little beauty is my 1961 Singer Featherweight. She was a gift from my mom and dad probably 10 years ago. I have never named her, but definitely consider her my baby. She is the white/mint green.
She is supposed to have a different pedal, but it was changed out to a traditional featherweight pedal before she was mine.
Her case is a little banged up, but solid.
The case's plastic handle has developed a crack, so I no longer use the handle. Does anyone have advice on replacing the handle? The metal piece is riveted, not screwed into the top...Hoping to get some helpful hints. I looked for a leather purse handle at Joann's, but nothing they had would fit...Help!
So exciting... our machines are long lost twins!
ReplyDeleteShe is beautiful....I have the little black centennial number..and LOve LOve that machine...The handle I will think on maybe even ask Handy what he thinks...You have a good one and thanks for the share..drool....
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous machine. I have my Mum's 1954 Singer 99K bought for her by my Grandma when she was 19, aren't they real beauties?! :D
ReplyDeleteWOW...a white Featherweight! Lucky you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a priceless,cute little machine---enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a darling machine... and how does she sew!?? Hope you can get the handle fixed... would love to have a machine like this for piecing my quilts :) Enjoy and thanks for sharing... hope you find a way to fix that handle... Kathi
ReplyDeleteWhat a TREASURE....and a rare color. I have several Featherweights...one a Centennial and one that was beat up, so I had it painted PURPLE. It's a stunner, and they both SEW fantastic. There is a website that has parts for Featherweights. You might try it for a handle or suggestion for fixing. Also, might try Gorilla Glue then reinforce with a cover around the handle. My cases have leather stitched around the handle.

What a pretty little machine! So nice!
ReplyDeletecute! good luck with finding a new handle.
ReplyDeleteWow that is so cool. I keep hearing of people getting featherweights and I think...who is getting rid of theirs so others can have them? I must never be in the right place at the right time. I am sure you are enjoying this.
ReplyDeleteI have one, too, and since I didn't really trust the handle on the case I now use a wheeled, padded, drink cooler to transport her in. I think it is about a 24 can size, I just measured the machine to see what size I needed.
ReplyDeleteTry a shoe/luggage repair store. The shoe man in our town has replaced several riveted handles and many sewn on handles. It's a nice little machine! RSmith
ReplyDeleteHave you tried contacting Singer to ask what they suggest?
ReplyDeleteHow about an old suit case handle? I have a Singer 301A that was the machine I learned to sew on (many years ago!) I wouldn't trade that machine for anything still sews like a dream!
ReplyDeleteYou can drill out a rivet & replace with a slightly larger one. You could search junk shops for an old suitcase that has a similar handle or get a matching one from an otherwise damaged case.
ReplyDeleteGood luck

Out of loyalty, I"m visiting the Featherweight identified links first. :-) Can't help with replacement, but I recently heard that handles are the first thing to go on the cases and we simply should not use them. So I carry mine in a large tote bag. https://knitnkwilt.wordpress.com/
