FNwF January 2015

I got a late start last night on Friday Night with Friends, but I did make it into my sewing room where I started this new Valentine's door banner. I have a wider door banner for Valentine's day, but it blocks the windows in my front door and makes it hard to see who is knocking at the door. This size, 11.5 x 30.5 inches works better. I decided to take my inspiration from those favorite candy conversation hearts. My hearts say: ALL MINE, LOVE YA, and HUGS & KISSES. The real candy hearts have red writing on them, but I think black will show better on my door. Here is the link to see what everyone else accomplished for FNwF http://stitchingcubbyhole.blogspot.com.au/2015/01/fnwf.html
This week, I also worked on some more blue--albeit light blue Medallion Log Cabin blocks for part of the Rainbow Scrappy Challenge 2015.
 This one is more aqua
and this one is moving into turquoise. Here is the link to more RSC15 inspiration http://superscrappy.blogspot.com/2015/01/scraphappy-saturday-still-feeling-blue.html
I bought some plastic cases to organize all my 2015 scrappy projects. They were $5 each at Joann's and are really made for scrapbooking, but I think they will help me to stay organized and they are roomy!
My iron has been slowly dying and I have really not wanted to break down and buy another one. But after ruining two pieces of white fabric with brown water this morning, I broke down and ran to Target. I used to be a huge supporter of Rowenta irons, but they are not the quality they used to be! I did decide on buying their low end model because Target had it on sale for $45. I am curious to see how long it will last. It is not very heavy duty, so I might end up just using it for my mobile sewing center. I am contemplating asking for an Oliso for my birthday this year, but even those don't have the best reviews and I am not sure which model it best for quilting. If anyone has iron advice I would love to hear your opinion!
Shannon over at Modern Tradition Quilts http://moderntraditionquilts.blogspot.com is sponsoring a Charm Square Sample Quilt Along. The quilt is going to be about 60 inches square and uses two print charm packs and either two solid charm packs or a solid you cut to 4 7/8 in. squares. I had these two charm packs in my stash and I think they will make a great tablecloth to go with my Fiestaware dishes. I just need to find a background fabric. I will hit my LQS and see what I can find. The first block sewing directions won't be posted until next week, so I have a little time. Join us it looks like fun!!!
My Valentine's door banner is ready for embroidering and I am still hand quilting my Journey of a Quilter BOM project (hopefully done with it in another couple of weeks). The two football playoff games this evening and the two tomorrow will give me lots of time for Slow Sunday Stitching. Get some more inspiration here http://kathysquilts.blogspot.com

  6. I have also had iron woes. After going through several very expensive irons that didn't hold up, a couple years ago I got a nothing-fancy iron from Vermont Country Store. If I remember right, it was $29.95. It does not do steam, which I have found I really like because there are no holes on the sole plate - makes it great for applique. It looks a bit old fashion but has been a real workhorse for not that much money. When I need steam I either mist the piece with water or I get out my 20 year old Black & Decker.

  7. I've heard that if you use distilled water in the new irons, it wrecks the electronics and they leak. I use a spray bottle so I've never checked it out. You might want to just to find out if it's true. CDahlgren at live dot com

Eat your Fruits and Veggies by Pat Sloan is so cute, I don't have it...yet. I agree it will make a pretty table runner.

  13. Great idea with the Valentine banner. Love those tubs to put projects in. They are a great size for quilt blocks.
Irons are not fun. I have wasted money on a lot of expensive ones. Now i buy the cheapest and strangely have found they last the longest. Doesn't make sense!

  14. What a "sweet" idea for a holiday door banner. Lovely light blues too. I go through a lot of irons too, but finally stopped putting water in them. They last much longer and I use a spray bottle when I need steam.

  17. I'm starting to have problems with my Rowenta as well. I think next time I'll just go for a cheap iron and use it til it dies. I've used the oliso iron in classes. Didn't like it for applique because those retractable feet would catch on the pieces and wrinkle them up instead of pressing them flat. That has just been my experience, so take it with a grain of salt!

  18. Love your Valentine door banner!

  19. Love your projects! I like the idea of using those boxes too. As for irons I went thru the same thing. I follow Bonnie Hunter and she gave the tip of never putting water in any iron. Keep a sprtiz bottle near by instead. No more iron problems! I also discovered learning to use a dry iron more is a plus as you will have less distortion in your blocks. Hope this helps!

  20. Those brown stains might be removed. This happened to me once and I was told to use peroxide that was diluted with water....takes the stain right out!!BEWARE on coloured fabrics though!
As for irons...I love my TFAL. It doesn't shut off and aren't too expensive. But I have seen through others that some of the cheaper ones are great and put the expensive ones to shame! Good luck finding one!

  24. I love your Valentine's banner. I wish I could hang one on my front door, but my house faces south and anything you hang on the door or in the windows fades quickly even with an overhanging front porch. I love that charm pack. Great fabrics. Can't help you with the iron. I just have a basic no name.

  27. I so relate to your iron dilemma, Tanya. My 20-something year old (cheapo) Black and Decker died last year, and I haven't found a satisfactory replacement yet. I'm currently haunting he thrift stores for a good, old one. I'm liking your turquoise log cabin.

  34. The door banner looks lovely!

My iron quit on me again a couple days ago. I bought this one last year and it's a Rowenta (It was the third one for me). They seem to have all the same problem, the water leaks from the sole plate after a few months to a year. They are very nice but unfortunately they just don't last, they are junk. No more Rowenta!
